This is Emma's sister. When we got back from our pink granite hike, about 40 people were at the house just hanging around. "My sister lives on that island over there and she invited us over for apertifs," she said, gesturing. "You'll know her house when you get there, it's the only one on the island." Emma had told her that between 15-40 people would arrive around 6:00.
The house was built in 1810, which is imprinted on the stone entryway. It was a farm house.
When we're standing at the top of the property looking over at Emma's island, we're told that the island is cut off from the road at high tide. "In about a half an hour you will be stuck here for 2 1/2 hours."
We knew pizza was coming to the other house in a half an hour, but more concerning was where we had parked the rental car. "You should probably move it," we were told. Move it, come back and then you may have to walk through a little water when you leave. So I moved it, came back and ate local pistachio salami and olives while talking to some people who live on Greenwood (7 blocks from my condo).
When we left, this was our path. The car had been parked in the middle of where the water now sat. It would have been covered!
More water walking...
Still, the car was in a lot of water, even though I moved it twice, just to be sure! This place lives and moves according to the tide. When the tide is in you see a stream of people walking toward the water with flotation devices and stand up paddle boards. When it recedes, that stream of people heads home. It's beatiful and strange. I'm just grateful that our rental car is not floating toward Brittain as I write this...
Flying to Nice tonight for a five days to be a part of a wedding celebration ...Alice, the first person I met the day I arrived in Vietnam, is having a five star wedding party next Saturday. Haven't seen her in 5 years!

I'm glad you moved the car a few times too - I don't think the rental company would have been impressed. Seems like they should put up some sort of warning, like red stripes on the shoulder or something to warn tourists.
ReplyDeleteI just want you all to know that if Marjie hadn't twice re-parked the car she and I would be petitioning you all for donations to bail us out of jail and pay for that rental. It'd have been totaled! THANKS MARJIE!!
